Tropical Storm Gilma Forecasted to Bring Rain to Hawaii as Hector Dissipates
Two tropical systems are weakening as they approach Hawaii, reducing the likelihood of severe weather during the Labor Day weekend. Tropical Storm Gilma, which peaked as a Category 3 hurricane, is expected to be downgraded on Thursday or Friday and could bring heavy rain and gusty showers as it tracks north of the islands. Its weakened state will limit its impacts but may still cause flash floods and mudslides.
Meanwhile, Hector has dissipated over 1,000 miles from Hilo, contributing to the storms’ weakening due to cold water.
The Big Island may see thunderstorms starting late Thursday, with rain spreading across other islands over the weekend. Although Gilma could help alleviate drought conditions, concerns about wildfire dangers remain high after last year’s devastating wildfires linked to Hurricane Dora.
This weekend marks a potential historic moment for Hawaii, as it could experience two tropical storm systems in close succession for the first time since 1992.
